The paintings were commissioned in 1992 for the Northern Territory Government department of Industry & Development, for their offices at Development House, 76 The Esplanade, through Lucas’s agent, Anne Phelan of Framed Gallery and leased to the department for many years. At the end of the lease they were put into storage. The artist’s husband bought back the paintings in November 2017. With preparatory sketches which have remained in Lucas’s archives, and the ten paintings, they form a complete suite of work from her early abstract period. This suite also relates to a large abstract oil on canvas in the permanent collection of MAGNT (Museums & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory), exhibited in CONTEMPORARY TERRITORY, a group exhibition curated by Daena Murray in 1996.
